The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition will be released in about 6 weeks. That's a good amount of time to start thinking about what kind of mage builds you want to try when it hits the shelves.
..because you are going to play as a mage, right?
These are the best Skyrim perks for any situation you could encounter. Thieves’ Guild Armor, perhaps, or a Ring of Major Deft Hands - you can successfully rob unsuspecting citizens pretty. I need some tips on the best gear i can get for my level 25 pure mage in skyrim. Ive got the arch mages robes and the Morokei mask. Other than that, some horrible scaled gloves with an enchant and boots with an even worse enchant.
The way I see it, there are two main ways to play mages in Skyrim:
- Be a generalist. You invest points in every single school and enchanting, making you a jack-of-all-trades but a master of none.
- Specialize. This allows you to focus on just a few schools and roleplay more. And no -- just because you're roleplaying doesn't mean you need to speak like you just stepped out of Medieval Times.
The very first character I build in Skyrim was going to be a generalist. But over time I realized it wasn't how I really wanted to play, so I re-rolled. I found that by specializing, you give the game much more replayability and you'll probably have more fun.
That's why I put together a few different mage builds to try. My personal favorites are #2 and #3, but I'm a weirdo.
Skyrim Mage Build #1: The Pyromancer
When I was a kid, we used to call one friend of mine a pyro.. but really all of us were. What boys don't like to play with fire?
Skyrim gives you several opportunities to burn down your enemies. Rather than having to wait for a sunny day to burn bugs with a magnifying glass, you can just shoot fire out of your hands.
Very convenient.
Fire is great in this game because not many enemies resist it. This makes sense, considering you're in the coldest part of Tamriel.
Caricature studio. Here are a few core components of this build:
- Destruction: Flame Cloak wraps you in flames, burning any enemies that get close. Fireball lets you shoot.. well, a fireball. Fire Rune allows you to set traps that explode when enemies walk over them.
- Conjuration: Flame Atronach conjures a fireball-shooting, ninja-kicking, floating being made of fire to fight for you. It also explodes when killed- an 'Up Yours' move towards your enemies.
- Fire-Enchanted Weapon: You're a mage, so you (theoretically) aren't the strongest person in the world. But that doesn't prevent you from wielding a fire-enchanted dagger or bow for when you run out of magicka. You could also use a fire staff.
As far as other skill trees go, Alteration for mage armor makes the most sense, although I personally find it annoying to constantly re-cast it. Hopefully some great magic mods come out for Skyrim: Special Edition that grant a longer duration for mage armor.
Mage Build #2: Controller
I love Illusion spells.
There are basically four branches -- Calm, Fear, Fury and Courage. The Controller uses all four.
- Calm is best used in situations where you're outnumbered and need to improve the odds. It causes your enemy to just stand there and essentially ignore you.
- Fear causes the enemy to run away. A friend of mine used Fear in caves to make all of his enemies run to the back, where he'd then use..
- Fury causes things to start fighting everything it sees.If you're closest, it will go after you. If its best friend is closest, your enemy will turn around and start smacking that friend.
- Courage is a buff to cast on allies. Controllers typically travel with companions, as they do a lot of the dirty work and mop up the last enemy after the rest have run away or killed each other.
Personally, one of the most satisfying feelings in Skyrim is watching enemies take each other out due to Fury. But the other spells are fun as well. Calm is great if there's just one enemy (like an animal) and you don't really feel like fighting it.
Keep in mind that your main role with this build is to use Illusion spells, but it doesn't hurt to have some kind of damage-dealing ability like a weapon or Destruction spells.
Skyrim Mage Build #3: The Necroblade
Some people call this build a Nightblade, but I think of them as two different things.
Nightblades use Illusion spells to complement their sneakiness. Necroblades lean on Conjuration -- namely Necromancy.
Here's how a typical dungeon might go:
- Sneak up behind the first enemy you see and slit his throat.
- Raise the body as a zombie to fight for you.
- Get other enemies nearby to start looking for you. You can do this by shooting an arrow into a wall, or they may have heard you casting the Raise Dead spell and be doing this anyways.
- Your zombie will hear the enemy talking and seek them out, then start punching (or biting) them in the face.
- Rinse and repeat.
I love this build because it's the most sinister one I could think of in Skyrim. You're taking out enemies before they even get a chance to fight, then turn their dead bodies against their friends.
Meanwhile their friends have no idea what just happened. All they know is one minute they're hanging out drinking mead, and the next minute their former friend comes around the corner as a zombie ready to eat brains.
And you just hang out around the corner and laugh.
MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
..or something like that.
Mage Build #4: Priest
What better way to follow up a dark, evil build with a light, holy-ish one?
Think of the Priest build as your basic healer build in an MMORPG. Namely, the one in Everquest.
Your job isn't to take down enemies, but instead support your allies as they do most of the dirty work.
There are several ways you can do this:
- Restoration - Healing your allies and keeping their stamina up is your key focus.
- Illusion - The main spells you'll use here are buffs like Courage. You can use the others, but that's getting more into the Controller build.
- Heavy Armor - You can't keep your buddy alive if you die after one hit. Wear heavy armor to help you stay alive.
- Mace and Shield - The mace is because you can't always rely on your companion doing all of the damage -- especially during big fights with dragons or large groups. The shield is to help with survivability and bash enemies going after your buddy.
I suppose you could also call this a Paladin build, but generally Pallies are on the front lines whereas the Priest is in the back and only enters the fray when necessary.
Skyrim Build #5: Dragon Priest
There's a bit of lore behind dragons and the dragon priests that served them. ..but you don't need to read all of that stuff if you don't want to.
Here's how a Dragon Priest plays:
- Mask - The most important thing is to wear your favorite Dragon Priest mask. Each mask has different stats and colors, so I can't really tell you which one to wear. In general though, you should choose one that helps Mage stats like schools of magic, such as Vokun or Nahkriin.
- Robes - Most mage builds use robes, but they're especially important with a DP build. All Dragon Priests you find in the game are wearing robes, so you should too!
- Staff - The staff you use is up to you, but a strong Destruction staff is best. Obviously one of those from a DP is preferred.
- Destruction - Dragon Priests hit fast and hard with Destruction magic. Pick your favorite and run with it.
- Conjuration - One of the most annoying things about fighting Dragon Priests as a Conjurer is that they tend to turn your atronachs against you. Be prepared to do the same with your Dragon Priest build -- sending enemy minions back into their ranks is good fun.
The main roleplaying aspect I'd say to keep in mind is that DPs served dragons. Therefore it doesn't make sense to go the Dragonborn/main quest route unless you are justifying it by saying you are a rebel Dragon Priest or something like that.
Conclusion
The best thing about Skyrim: Special Edition is the sheer number of possibilities available. These five builds are just a few. There are many more combinations you can try, like a Druid or Pacifist build.
Whatever you choose to do, good luck and have fun in Skyrim!
Skyrim Best Ring For Mage Skin
Rings in Skyrim have a plethora of effects, among which you’ll find some incredibly useful skills that’ll aid you on many adventures.
Over time you’ll come across pieces of unenchanted silverware or goldware that will only serve as money-making items or luxury items. But you’ll also find some very interesting enchanted rings that might help you turn into a Werewolf multiple times per day(no joke).
As you might imagine, some rings can prove to be more useful than others. It all depends on what you’re looking to achieve, but in most cases, rings are an excellent complement to any type of armor that you’re wearing.
There are many rings capable of making you a better Dragonborn, so which of will you choose? Let me make your decision easier by ranking my top picks for the best rings you’ll ever get your hands on.
15. Enchanted Ring
Even though the Enchanted Ring doesn’t have the most creative name, getting your hands on this practical piece of silverware can prove to be quite effective regardless of which class you’re playing.
The ring has a quirk that extends your health bar by 20 points, and obtaining this little accessory is surprisingly easier than you’d think.
The Enchanted Ring is found during the College of Winterhold questline, and you get to choose whether you’d like to keep it or return it to the mage who assigns you the quest.
Selecting the latter option will remove the ring from your inventory, but you’ll obtain a small gold reward in return. I’ll let you decide which is the better choice.
14. Silver-Blood Family Ring
As the name of this ring suggests, the Silver-Blood Family Ring has been in possession of the Silver-Blood family for generations.
That means that you can’t get your hands on this ring without completing a quest for the family first. And, in fact, you get to obtain this ring as a reward if you happen to kill Madenach while helping out the family.
This ring fortifies smithing by 15% making it one of the best smithing items in the game.
You can wear it with other smithing-enhancing items too so be sure to stack those buffs if you’re on your way to the forges of Skyrim.
13. The Bond of Matrimony
This is the ring that you get once you contract matrimony with any spouse(wife or husband) in the game.
Note you’ll get just one copy of this ring with your selected spouse getting a second copy.
The ring gives a 10% buff to restoration spells but it’s mainly used as a way to represent that you and your spouse are married.
In fact, every single spouse in the game will wear the Bond of Matrimony from the moment you get married to each other until they die. ‘Till death do us part and all that jazz.
12. Hircine’s Ring
Hircinie’s Ring is a Daedric Artifact that belongs to Hircine himself.
This ring allows you to transform as many times as you want into a werewolf, but you need to complete the Companion’s questline first if you want to control the transformations by yourself.
The ring is a cursed artifact which means you have a 10% chance of turning into a werewolf whenever you wear it (as long as you’re cursed with lycanthropy).
You can obtain this ring by speaking to a werewolf in Falkrath, who will give it to you in hopes that you return it to Hiricine himself. But we all know you might just kinda “forget” to do that.
11. Ring of Pure Mixtures
Crack edgecam 2014 r2. The Mortar and Pestle, the small apothecary shop located in Dawnstar, is usually run by Frida.
However many years before, her husband was still around and helped her with business. The man held quite a unique quest in his life: he wanted to find a special ring that allowed apothecaries to create powerful potions, stronger than those typically crafted in their shop.
As you can probably guess by now: Frida’s husband died long before finding this ring.
Frida, however, would love for her husband’s dream to be fulfilled. Which is why she assigns the quest of finding this ring onto you.
And it’s actually an achievable dream, believe it or not. You can retrieve the Ring of Pure Mixtures and keep it to craft potions 12% stronger than average!
Skyrim Best Ring For Mage 2
10. Ring of Namira
The Ring of Namira is quite a unique and malevolent item.
It allows you to feed on the corpses of the diseased which increases your health.
Not to mention for actual stats the ring boosts up your stamina by 50 points.
Keep in mind that feeding on corpses is seen as a crime by the guards of Skyrim, so be sure to only perform the action if you’re not around any stuffy old guards.
Namira is the Daedric Prince of the dark so wear this ring proudly to represent the interests of those who roam the plains of Oblivion.
The Daedric Artifact also triggers a random encounter upon wearing it, but it might bug out if you’re in werewolf form so be careful of that.
9. Ring of Bloodlust
The Ring of Bloodlust is a scary item. It allows werewolves to deal 50% more damage with each attack, but in return, it will make you take 50% more damage.
It’s a sort of “all in” item that trades health and resistance for sheer strength.
You may also take full advantage of this ring by using Berserk if you’re an Orc, as it will remove the debuff of 50% resistance and add an extra 100% damage to the mix.
The Ring of Bloodlust is the first fundamental item that every werewolf in Skyrim should be looking to get their claws on!
8. Ahzidal’s Ring of Necromancy
Necromancers and Conjurers alike, behold Ahzidal’s Ring of Necromancy.
This powerful piece of goldware makes every undead creature that you summon explode in a ball of ice when they take a hit, dealing 50 points of frost damage to whichever enemies are in range.
This item can be found in the Kolbjorn Barrow when completing the “Unearthed” quest. And it holds the title of the best necromancy ring in the game so it’s worth tracking down in my book.
7. Ahzidal’s Ring of Arcana
This ring is found in the same quest and the same location where you get Ahzidal’s Ring of Necromancy mentioned above, but you’ll need to complete a small puzzle in a room filled with pressure plates before you can obtain it.
You’ll find the Ring of Arcana waiting for you on top of a pedestal after you make your majestic entrance to the room.
This incredible ring grants access to two additional spells in your repertoire of Destruction magic which are Freeze and Ignite.
These two powerful spells can’t be learned and can only be cast when the ring is worn. So if you’re a mage looking forward to some destruction chaos you’ll want to track this down.
6. Nightweaver’s Band
Nightweaver’s Band can be earned while completing the Dark Brotherhood questline.
The small but effective ring fortifies both your Destruction magic skill and your Sneak skill by 10 points, making it ideal for silent magicians who require sneak above anything else.
5. Ring of the Erudite
So this ring can only be obtained if you become a Vampire Lord when the Bloodline quest is complete.
It gives you quicker Magicka regeneration skills as well as an extra 100 points of Magicka. Talk about a sweet deal!
This is one of the best magic rings in the game no doubt. You don’t need to be in Vampire Lord form to have it work, but you do need to be a Vampire Lord to get it!

4. Ring of the Beast
Similar to the Ring of the Erudite, the Ring of the Beast may only be obtained by a Vampire Lord when the Bloodline quest is complete.
This ring is specialized for unarmed combat instead of magic as it increases unarmed attacks by 20 points of damage while in Vampire Form. It also gives you an extra 100 points of health which is a nice bonus.
It’s more suited to warriors than mages, unlike its Erudite counterpart, but worth a try if you like these kinds of boosts.
3. Ring of the Moon
The Ring of the Moon is one of the best werewolf items in the game as it increases the duration of a Lycan’s howls by 25%.
The ring is unique and cannot be smelted or disenchanted.
Furthermore, with a base value of over 2000 gold coins, it’s one of the most expensive rings in Skyrim.
You may only obtain it if you’ve already been turned into a werewolf and it is sold by Majni at Frostmoon Crag.
Now it’s worth sharing this is a very powerful ring, so be sure to wear it with care… and hopefully alongside other werewolf-enhancing rings.
2. Ring of Instinct
The Ring of Instinct causes a werewolf to fully focus on its surroundings.
If you turn into a Lycan while wearing this ring, the world around you will slow down for 20 seconds whilst your concentration is at its peak. This is a huge strategy if you’re pinned down or just need to make a calculated getaway.
1. Ring of the Hunt
The Ring of the Hunt is the best ring in the game for sure, and also the most expensive one.
It costs 3500 coins and it is also sold by Majni at the Crag if you’ve already been turned into a werewolf.
The Ring of the Hunt makes your health regenerate while you’re in werewolf form so if you mitigate the damage you take, you can become almost unstoppable.
